Radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel

To front page

Accumulation of radioactive waste and spent nuclear fuel is a major problem in north-west Russia. Virtually no spare storage capacity is left. A main task for the Russians is to build storage and disposal facilities for all types of radioactive waste from civilian and military sources. While part of the waste stems from operation and maintenance of nuclear-powered icebreakers and the Kola nuclear power plant, much derives from decommissioned nuclear submarines. The main aim of the Norwegian effort in this area is to foster a continual process of safe handling, transportation, storage and disposal of spent nuclear fuel and radioactive waste in accordance with internationally recognised principles.
